GARY NACHTIGALL

Gary Nachtigall was born in Delano, California, but grew up in Reedley where he attended Immanuel High School and Reedley College. He graduated from Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas, in 1960. In 1961 he responded to an invitation from Fresno Pacific College president Arthur Wiebe, to establish an athletic program at FPC. Gary moved the (then) Vikings men’s basketball program from also ran to state champion in a matter of two short seasons. He coached the Vikings men’s basketball team from 1961-72 and served as FPC's athletics director from 1961-75. In the early 1960’s he initiated and coached soccer, track and field, golf and tennis teams. He guided FPC through the transition from a junior college to membership in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). He has also served as professor of geography and Dean of students. He is the recipient of the Outstanding Young Men of America award (1972) and the FPC President’s Distinguished Service Award (1984). He has been active in a variety of roles serving the College Community Mennonite Brethren Church and the larger community, especially the Kerckhoff Neighborhood. Along with his roles as husband and father to three daughters, Gary is regarded the father of Fresno Pacific athletics.
