Sunbirds split double-header with Patten
FPU bats silent in Game 1, come alive in Game 2

Fresno - The Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds split a double-header with the Patten University Lions this afternoon at Clovis East High School.

Lions right-hander Brandon Boyd went the distance in the nine inning opener. Boyd gave up only one hit, to Adam Alva in the first inning, struck out nine, walked four and hit three batters to post the complete-game win.

FPU starter Tom Hosack, who gave up a fourth inning two run homerun to Ivan Stewart, was tagged with the loss. Hosack, who gave up three hits, recorded eight strike-outs an four walks in six and-a-third innings.

Hosack was relieved by Brian Fast and Paul Valenzuela. Fast gave up a run in two innings while Valenzuela gave up four hits and three runs before recording the final two outs.

FPU bats came alive in Game 2. They scored four runs in the first inning and chased Lions starter Danny Silvas after two and-a-third. The Sunbirds tagged Silvas for eight hits and six runs.

Adam Alva and Nelson Caraballo both went 2-for-3 to lead the FPU offense.

Josh Franco yielded one hit over four innings to record the win. Zach Darrah pitched the fifth inning before the game was called by mercy rule.

FPU head coach Oscar Hirschkorn had mixed emotions about the day. "It is great to get a series under our belts, but I am disappointed with our effort in Game 1. We were facing a guy that was throwing slower than the speed limit and our guys did not adjust. We refused to believe he wasn't going to through a fast ball. Hopefully we will learn from this."

The Sunbirds will be in San Francisco next weekend for a three game series with San Francisco State.

They return home for their Golden State Athletic Conference opener on February 11 when they host Concordia. Game 1 of the double-header begins at Clovis East High School at 11:00 a.m.
