Sunbirds split GSAC doubleheader with Concordia

Game 1 Box score: Concordia 8, Sunbirds 1

Game 2 Box score: Sunbirds 4, Concordia 3

Fresno - The Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds managed only eight hits on the day, but still managed to split their Golden State Athletic Conference opening doubleheader at Clovis East High School this afternoon.

The Concordia University Eagles got eight runs on 10 hits to win the first game at Clovis East High School 8-1.

The Eagles pounded 10 more hits in game two, but Eric Lingren's three-run home run in the third inning and Andy Locke's solo shot in the fifth lifted the Sunbirds to a 4-3 win in game in game two.

Michael Mendrin went six innings to pick up the win. Josh Franco earned the save.

Three FPU fielding errors put Mendrin in a big hole in the sixth. The left-hander battled out of a one-out, bases loaded, jam without yielding a run thanks to a 6-4-3 double play.

"He pitched his heart out in the sixth," said FPU coach Oscar Hirschkorn. "He should have been out of the inning, but we extended it with poor fielding. That was clutch pitching. He did a great job."

The Sunbirds dodged another bullet in the seventh when the Eagles again loaded the bases. With one out Hirschkorn called on Franco to close it. Franco got Jake Haaker to fly out to center, but it was deep enough for Nick Lentine to tag and score easily from third. That made it 4-3. Franco coaxed Brent Dohling to fly our to center field for the final out.

In the first game losing pitcher Nelson Caraballo cruised through the first five innings, but got roughed up for four runs in the sixth. Most of the damage was done on three consecutive hits: a home run by Haaker, a single by Gregg Davidson followed by a home run by Daniel Robertson.

Brian Fast relieved Caraballo in the seventh, but gave up four runs (two earned) in just one-third of an inning.

The Sunbirds scratched out a run in the bottom of the ninth to spoil the Eagles shutout.

The Sunbirds, now 5-2 overall and 1-1 in GSAC play, will be in Azusa on Thursday for two games against Azusa Pacific. Saturday they move to Riverside for a doubleheader against California Baptist.

The next home game for FPU will be Wednesday, February 22, when they host the Sea Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay. Time of the first pitch at Reedley College's Tiger Stadium is 6:00 p.m.
