Sunbirds drop two at Azusa Pacific

Game 1 Box score: APU 8, Sunbirds 5

Game 2 Box score: APU 14, Sunbirds 8

Azusa - The Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader today in Azusa.

The host Cougars jumped all over FPU starters Zach Darrah and Josh Franco to put their guests in a hole early.

In game one the Cougars jumped on Darrah for six runs (all earned) on eight hits in only three and-a-third innings. APU led 8-0 before the Sunbirds answered with two runs in the seventh, two in the eight and one in the ninth to make it close.

The Cougars roughed up Franco for six runs (five earned) on only two hits and a pair of walks in one-plus innings. It was a messy affair as both teams committed four errors. The Cougars led 9-2 after two, but the Sunbirds got four back in the third. That made it 9-6, but the guests would get no closer.

Elliot Salcedo was a bright spot at the plate for FPU going a combined 5-9 on the day. The junior from Wilmington, California, also scored a run and batted in to others.

The Sunbirds, now 5-4 overall and 1-3 in GSAC play, travel to Riverside for a doubleheader with No. 25 California Baptist . Game-time on the Magnolia Avenue campus is 11:00 a.m.
