Final -
Cal State Monterey Bay 6, FPU 2

At Tiger Stadium, Reedley College

Box score

Fresno - The pained expression on Oscar Hirschkorn's face was hard to miss.

The first-year FPU head coach had just witnessed his team commit seven errors in a 6-2 loss to the visiting Seas Otters of California State University Monterey Bay.

"What was that?" asked Hirschkorn. "Seven errors in a college baseball game? We are better than that, but we sure did not show it tonight. We have a lot of work to do."

The Sea Otters scored two runs in the second and two more in the sixth to chase FPU starter Jordan Keener.

The Sunbirds got two back in their side of the sixth, after two were out, by stringing together three consecutive hits. Justin Rhoades singled and scored on Brett Howard's triple. Mike Pierce drove in Howard with a singe, but Casey Keating ended with by grounding out 6-3.

Of the six runs the Otters scored, only one was earned.

The bright spot, if there was one for the Sunbirds on this chilly night, was pitcher Jerrod Wood. The junior right-hander from Billings, Montana, by way of Buchanan High School and Reedley College, inherited a runners at first and second, no outs, jam from Keener in the top of the sixth and did not yield a run.

Gabe Chase greeted Wood with a drag bunt down the third base line to load the bases, but Wood got Troy Sanchez to pop out to the shortstop, Daniel Gomez to fly out to center field and Ross Hoffman to fly out to left field. Wood yielded only Chase's bunt and no runs in three innings of work.

The Sunbirds, who saw their record dip to 5-7 on the season, return to Golden State Athletic Conference action this weekend. They will be in San Diego for a Saturday doubleheader against the Point Loma Nazarene University Seas Lions.

The Sunbirds next home appearance will be Thursday, March 2, when they host Vanguard in a doubleheader at Tiger Stadium on the Reedley College Campus.
