Mustangs take two of three from Sunbirds at
Grizzly Stadium

Game 1: FPU 10, TMC 7 (Box Score)

Game 2: TMC 5, FPU 1 (Box Score)

Game 3: TMC 12, FPU 6 (Box Score)

Fresno - It was a perfect day for baseball. It was a bright sunny April day after the wettest March in Fresno history- and what better place to play the Grizzly Stadium?

The Sunbirds forged a great start to a unique triple-header, but when the dust had settled on almost seven hours of baseball, the visiting Mustangs of The Master's College walked home with two of three wins.

Game 1 was the completion of a March 1 affair in Santa Clarita that was called because of darkness in the bottom of the eighth inning with the scored tied 7-7.

Adam Alva's double in the top of the 11th drove in Andy Locke for what proved to be the winning run. Zach Darrah (3-2) pitched the final two innings to pick up the win

In Game 2 Mark McElroy scattered five hits and yielded only one run to notch a complete game victory for the Mustangs. Michael Mendrin (3-4) , who gave up six hits and three runs in 7 and 2/3 innings, was tagged with he loss.

If the Sunbirds let Game 2 slip away, they giftwrapped Game 3 for the Mustangs.

"We just handed it to them," said a frustrated FPU coach Oscar Hirschkorn. "How many walks did we give them? What team was that out there? We have to do better than that."

For the record, FPU pitchers yielded 12 walks as the Mustangs scored 12 runs on only 10 hits.

Alva was a spark plug at the plate for the Sunbirds all day. In addition to his winning hit in the first game, the junior from Sanger was 3-for-3 and scored FPU's only run in Game 2, then went 2-for-4 and scored another run in Game 3.

The Sunbirds, now 14-18 overall and 9-15 in conference, take a break from GSAC play this weekend when they travel to Chico to face Chico State.

The next home date for the Sunbirds is Saturday, April 22 when they host Vanguard. Start time at Clovis East High School is 12:00 noon.
