No. 2 California Baptist sweeps pair from Sunbirds

Game 1 Box score: CBU 9, FPU 3

Game 2 Box score: CBU 4, FPU 0

Fresno - The visiting California Baptist University Lancers, ranked No.2 in the NAIA, enjoyed their short stay at the Clovis East High School baseball field today.

The Lancers played long-ball on a short field on their way to a 9-3, 4-0, Golden State Athletic Conference sweep of the Sunbirds.

Bridger Clark hit a three run shot in the fifth that barely cleared the wall in left field to spark a four run rally for the Lancers.

Mike Swain hit a three run home run to almost the same spot as the Lancers added four more runs in the sixth.

In game two the Lancers scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning. It was all they needed, but that didn't stop Robert Lundy from hitting a solo shot in the third, again barely clearing the wall in short left field.

If the first three Lancer home runs of the day would have been routine fly balls in most parks, not so with Gabe Mayorga lead off shot in the fifth. Mayorga crushed a 1-0 Nelson Caraballo offering, sending it high and long past the left field wall.

Jerrod Wood (1-2) and Caraballo (2-5) were tagged with the losses.

Eric Lingren was three-for-four and drove in a run for the Sunbirds in game one. Adam Alva was two-four-four and also drove in a pair in the first game. Lingren was two-for three in the second game.

"We knew they had power and our pitching allowed them to demonstrate it," said FPU head coach Oscar Hirschkorn. "But we didn't do a whole lot with our bats to help out Jared and Nelson."

The Sunbirds will be in Costa Mesa on Wednesday to make up a rained-out doulbeheader against Vanguard.

FPU returns to Clovis East next Saturday when they host Point Loma Nazarene. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 11:00 a.m.
