FPU go extra innings to split with #11 Point Loma Nazarene

Game 1: PLNU 8, FPU 3 (11 innings)

Game 2: FPU 7, PLNU 6 (9 innings)

Fresno - Adam Alva's 3-2, 2-out single to the gap in right center in the bottom of the ninth drove in a pair of runs, including the game-winner, to lift the Sunbirds to a split with No. 11 Point Loma Nazarene.

The score was tied 5-5 after seven innings to force extra innings. The Sea Lions took the lead in the top of the 9th when Travis Wiley, who had walked to start the inning, scored on Jesse Gill's sac fly to left.

Game 2 was a pitchers dual through the first 10 innings. That changed in the top of the 11th with Chris Simpson's lead-off home run. FPU's Zach Darrah hit the next two batters and before it was over the Sea Lions had put six runs on the board.

The Sunbirds scratched out a run in the bottom of the inning, but it was too little, too late.

Darrah (2-2) was tagged with the loss in the first game, while Michael Mendrin (3-3) picked up the win in relief in the second game.

Justin Crisp was 4-for-8 on the day, scored three runs and drove in four more. The junior form Fresno hit a home run in each game. Crisp also gunned down Leighton at the plate in sixth to kill a PLNU rally. Leighton tried to score from second on Kellen Walker's single to left-center.

Justin Rhoades was also 4-8 on the day with three RBI and a home run. Freshman Jeff Taylor was 2-4 and drove in a run as the DH in the second game.

The Sunbirds wasted a fine effort by starting pitcher Jerrod Wood in the first game. Wood scattered six hits and yielded two runs in eight innings.

"We were in position to win both games," said FPU coach Oscar Hirschkorn. "But we were fortunate to gain the split. We did not play good team baseball. We had some guys in crucial situations either miss or ignore signs. That's a problem and it cost us."

The Sunbirds, now 13-16 on the season and 8-13 in GSAC play, will host The Master's College Mustangs Wednesday at Grizzly Stadium.

The action begins at 11:00 with completion of a March 1st game suspended in the 8th inning because of darkness. The score was tied 7-7 when the second game of a doubleheader, originally scheduled for Clovis East High School, was stopped. The doubleheader moved to Santa Clarita because of rain and poor field conditions in Fresno. Once completed, the teams with play two nine inning games.
