Salt Lake City, Utah - The host Westminster College Griffins ruined the debut of Clark Sheehy as the Sunbirds head coach.
The Griffins, ranked 17th in the NAIA preseason poll, swamped the Sunbirds 82-53 on the opening day of the Westminster Classic.
Junior transfer Moustafa El Zanaty led the Sunbirds with 13 points and four rebounds.
"We played a pretty good first half," said Sheehy. "We were only down by six at the half, but we didn't shoot as well as they did in the second half. But we'll lace 'em up again tomorrow night and give it another shot."
The Sunbirds face Montana- Western Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
Monday the Sunbirds move to Pocatello, Idaho, for an exhibition contest against Idaho State.
