Salt Lake City, Utah - The Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds handed rookie head coach Clark Sheehy his first collegiate win this afternoon- a 100-86 victory over Montana Western on the final day of the Westminster Classic in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Josh Urbiztondo and Lesego Molebatsi lead FPU, now 1-1 on the young season, with 22 points a-piece. Molebatsi had a team-high nine rebounds. Rudy Lopez (16 points, 7 rebounds), Moustafa El Zanaty (12 points) and A.C. Calderon (10 points) also reached double figures.
FPU held a 52-39 lead after 20 minutes and shot a sizzling 66 percent for the contest.
"I am real proud of these guys," said Sheehy. "They worked real hard and played pretty well today, especially after the second half yesterday (an 82-53 loss to host Westminster, ranked 17th in the NAIA Preseason poll.).
The Sunbirds move to Pocatello, Idaho, Monday to face Idaho State (7:05). FPU will be in the Save Mart Center on November 15 (8:00 p.m. tip-off) to face the Fresno State Bulldogs. Both contests are exhibitions and will not be included in the win-loss records of the participants
FPU's home-opener will be in the Special Events Center on Thursday, November 17, when the Sunbirds host Dominican University of San Rafael. Tip-off time is 7:30 p.m.
