Tuesday, January 31, 2006 - GSAC Game #12
Final -
California Baptist 61, Sunbirds 59

Box Score

Fresno - Peter Rajniak and Andrew Bruckner combined for 37 points to lead the California Baptist University Lancers to a 61-59 Golden State Athletic Conference win over the Sunbirds tonight in the Special Events Center.

Rajniak was good 8-12 from the field and finished with 22 points. None was more important than his final basket, a two-pointer in the lane with seven seconds to play. That broke a 59-59 tie.

Rudy Lopez' 3-point attempt at the buzzer looked great, but was in and out .

"This one hurts," said FPU head coach Clark Sheehy. "The guys worked real hard and competed, but we let it get away a little bit to start the second half. They put a little run on us and we had to fight back. Rudy's shot looked great. I thought it was good, then it kicked out. That's basketball."

The Sunbirds built an 11-point lead late in the first half (28-17), but a 9-2 Lancers' run in the final 3:20 closed the gap to four points (30-26).

The Lancers opened the second half with a 7-2 run, then pushed the lead to seven points (49-42) with 8:45 to play.

The Sunbirds clawed their way back into it, finally tying it at 53-53 on a pair of Lesego Molebatsi free throws 53-53 with 4:05 left.

Jordan Beshore drained a 3-pointer on FPU's next possession, but that was erased by a pair of Rajniak free throws and a basket by Thomas Taylor after the Sunbirds turned the ball over.

Ron Bailey's two free throws made it 59-56 Lancers with 35 seconds to play. Beshore tied it with another 3-pointer only to have Rajniak rush the floor and score the game-winner.

Lopez led the Sunbirds with 11 points and five assists. He was the only FPU player to reach double figures. Molebatsi and Josh Urbiztondo each scored nine points for FPU.

Bruckner scored 15 points for the Lancers.

"It always hurts when you drop one like this," continued Sheehy, "But we'll be alright. We've got more work to do and a big game on Saturday to get ready for."

The Sunbirds host the Westmont College Warriors (15-7, 8-4) Saturday. Tip-off time in the Special Events Center is 4:30 p.m.
