Saturday, January 7, 2006 - GSAC Game #4
Final:
Sunbirds 70, Point Loma Nazarene 59

Box score

Livestats from The Special Events Center

Fresno - Lesego Molebatsi and Rudy Lopez combined for 36 points and 26 rebounds to power the Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds to a 70-59 Golden State Athletic Conference win over the Point Loma Nazarene University Sea Lions tonight in the Special Events Center.

Molebatsi (21 points and 16 rebounds) and Lopez (15 points, 9 rebounds) did most of the damage as the Sunbirds picked up their first GSAC win of the season.

"Those two guys are getting it done," said FPU head coach Clark Sheehy of his two leading scorers. "After Tuesday (3-point loss at Westmont) we had a couple of good days of work and that showed tonight. We turned the ball over less and that was a key. Our team defense was better, too. I am real pleased with our effort."

Molebatsi opened the game with a short jumper in the paint and the Sunbirds were off and running. They bolted to a 12-2 lead, then withstood a couple of PLNU runs that closed the gap to two points (16-14, 24-22). FPU's margin was 10 points (36-26) at the break.

A Lopez 3-pointer increased FPU's lead to 15 points (45-30)- their biggest of the night- early in the second half. PLNU closed the gap to seven points three times- the last time with 2:16 to play, 62-55- but FPU's defense closed the door.

Matt Benson led the Sea Lions (7-5, 2-3) with 21 points and eight rebounds. Casey Ortiz (11 points), Xavier Lopez (10) and Josh Sanderson (10) also reached double figures for the guests.

Moustafa El Zanaty added 11 points for FPU.

The Sunbirds, now 8-4 overall and 1-3 in GSAC play, will be in La Mirada on Tuesday to face No. 21 Biola.

FPU returns home next Saturday to host Vanguard University. Tip-off time in the Special Events Center is 4:30 p.m.
