Thursday, February 16, 2006 - GSAC Game #16
Final -
Sunbirds 79, No. 21 Vanguard 63

Box score

Costa Mesa - Five players reached double figures as the Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds gave their playoff hopes a boost with a 79-63 Golden State Athletic Conference win over the No. 21 Vanguard University Lions tonight. The game was played in The Pit in Costa Mesa.

FPU built a 10-point lead after 20 minutes (38-28), expanded it to as many as 20 points (67-47) and cruised to the win.

The Sunbirds were good on 10 of 20 from beyond the 3-point arc and were credited with 23 assists on their 27 baskets.

FPU's guard combination of Moustafa El Zanaty (19 points), Josh Urbiztondo (17) and Jordan Beshore (13) combined for 49 points, their best combined effort of the season. Urbiztondo also had eight assists.

Rudy Lopez (15 points, 8 rebounds) and Lesego Molebatsi (10 points, 9 rebounds) took care of business in the paint as the Sunbirds broke a five-game losing skid.

"We've been talking about playing a full 40 minutes with no lapses," said FPU head coach Clark Sheehy. "We finally did that tonight., especially on the defensive end of the court. We got some stops and then hit some shots on the other end. After all the close ones we've lost, this on fells pretty good- to be on the road and play well and beat a good team like this is pretty special."

Horace Wormely led the Lions (17-10, 11-6) with 23 points.

With four games remaining, the Sunbirds (5-11) trail California Baptist and The Master's (both 6-10) for the eighth and final postseason berth.

The Sunbirds have an opportunity to further help their cause this Saturday when they host the Mustangs in the Special Events Center. Tip-off time is 4:30 p.m.
