Kevin Johnson named assistant coach

FPU men's basketball coach Clark Sheehy has signed his first recruit. And if names mean anything, he picked someone with a great basketball name.

Though Kevin Johnson won't suit up for the Sunbirds this fall he figures to play a key role in FPU's basketball operations.

Johnson, a native of Oklahoma City, graduated from St. Gregory's University in Shawnee, Oklahoma, in 2000 with a bachelors degree in health and sport sciences. Johnson was a three-year starter for the Cavaliers.

Johnson served as an assistant coach at St. Gregory's for the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons, then served as head coach for two seasons. He assisted at Oklahoma Baptist University last season.

"I believe in the vision that Coach Sheehy has for FPU basketball, "said Johnson. "He is a godly man with a lot of enthusiasm and passion for the right reasons."

Johnson and Sheehy first met as rivals on the basketball floor; Johnson at SGU and Sheehy at John Brown University.

"I am extremely excited to have Kevin Johnson join our basketball family," said Sheehy. "He brings both assistant and head coaching experience and a strong work ethic. He will be a tremendous help. He will have on floor coaching responsibilities as well as recruiting and scouting. He is a great addition to our staff."
