When Diane Wiese joined the Sunbirds coaching ranks prior to the 1995-96 season, she became the first woman to graduate from FPU and return to the university as a head coach.

In ten seasons Wiese guided the Sunbirds to a 180-138 record, including a 100-66 mark in Golden State Athletic Conference play. In 2001-02, the Sunbirds registered a 27-8 mark and a trip to the National Championships in Jackson, Tennessee.

Wiese was selected the GSAC coach of the year in 2001-02 as well as in her rookie season of 1995-96. On both occasions she guided the Sunbirds to the GSAC championship. On four occasions her teams have finished as the Golden State Athletic Conference runner-up. Her student athletes have earned numerous NAIA All-America and All-America Scholar Athlete honors.

Wiese graduated from Ripon Christian High School in 1986 and played one season of basketball at Modesto Junior College before transferring to FPU in 1987. She completed a bachelor of arts in physical education in 1990, and a master of arts in special education from FPU in 1996.

As a student-athlete Wiese appeared in 87 games for FPU and led the team in assists as a junior and in scoring as a senior. She helped the Sunbirds win the Golden State Athletic Conference and NAIA District Three titles in 1989 on their way to a NAIA National Championship Tournament appearance. She still ranks among FPU's career leaders in rebounding (520), assists (200) and scoring (755). The Sunbirds were 61-27 (.693) during Wiese's three seasons as a player, including 27-7 (.794) in GSAC play. She captained the 1989 and 1990 teams, and was the team's MVP her senior year. She was also named to the All-GSAC and All-District Three teams, and was honored as the FPU Senior Athlete of the Year in 1990.

Wiese served as a Sunbird assistant coach in 1990-91 while she completed a teaching credential. She taught physical education at Fresno Christian High School from 1991 to 1993, where she coached the Eagles girls basketball and volleyball teams. She rejoined the Sunbird coaching staff in the fall of 1993 when she also accepted a special education position with the Fresno County Office of Education Adult Transition Program.

Following the 2004-05 season Wiese announced her resignation from FPU in order to become the North Valley Area Director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Wiese resigns (March 31, 2005)
