Friday, November 11, 2005 - Holy Names Classic - Oakland
Final -
Sunbirds 64, Holy Names 57

Oakland - The Sunbirds got their 2005-06 regular season off to a great start with a 64-57 win over the host Holy Names Hawks in the opening round of the Holy Names Classic in Oakland tonight.

Senior guard Denise Fast led FPU with 19 points. Fast was 8-12 from the field. She was the only Sunbirds to reach double figures. Kari Cox was the top rebounder for FPU with eight.

Devina Brooks led the hosts, ranked No. 7 in the NAIA Division 2 Preseason Poll, with 20 points and nine rebounds.

"We were a bit tentative in the first half," said FPU head coach Jim Hall. "We had some shooting problems from long range (0-7 from beyond the 3-point arc) but were very disciplined and played some hard-nosed defense, especially in the second half. It was a good effort and a nice way to start."

The Sunbirds will face Oregon Tech for the championship tomorrow at 5:00 p.m.
