FPU 67, Oregon Tech 57

Oakland - The Sunbirds won the Holy Names Classic with a 67-57 win over Oregon Tech today in Oakland.

The Sunbirds pushed their early season record to 2-0 on the strength of double-figure scoring from four players.

Senior guard Denise Fast again led the way with 16 points. Fast also pulled down five rebounds and had two assists. Brooke Stanley (scored 13 points, Melissa Montoya added 12 and Molly McAmis 10. Montoya led FPU with six rebounds.

FPU made 18 of 27 shots from the field, including 3-6 from long range, in the first half (67%) to build a 42-24 lead at the break. They cooled to 7-18 in the second half, but still managed 56 percent from the field (25-45), 50 percent from 3-point range (5-10) and 75 percent from the charity stripe (12-16) for the game.

"We were on fire in the first half," said FPU head coach Jim Hall. "The we played some solid defense in the second half. I am real pleased, except with the fact that we committed 22 turnovers. We will have to work on taking better care of the basketball."

Laura Ivancie led Tech with 20 points.

The Sunbirds will be in Nashville, Tennessee, next weekend to participate in the Trevecca Nazarene State Farm Classic. Thursday FPU will face the hosts, ranked 13th in the preseason poll. Friday the Sunbirds will play Olivet Nazarene (Illinois) then conclude on Saturday against 21st-ranked St. Xavier (Illinois.).

FPU's home-opener is set for November 25 on the opening day of the FPU Holiday Classic. The Sunbirds will tip-off at 5:00 against William Jessup of Rocklin, California.
