Riverside - Red-hot shooting in the first half powered the host California Baptist Lancers to a 72-59 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over the Sunbirds tonight in Riverside.

The Lancers nailed nine-of-eleven 3-pointers in the opening 20minutes to take a commanding 43-24 lead into the locker room at the break.

FPU out-scored the hosts 35-29 in the final 20 minutes, but it wasn't enough.

Denise Fast led FPU, now 4-4 overall and 0-1 in GSAC play, with 17 points, four rebounds and four assists. Melissa Montoya added 14 points and Brooke Stanley 12.

Vanessa Wilt, 11-13 from the field, led the Lancers (6-2, 2-0) with 24 points.

The Sunbirds return to action Tuesday evening when they host Concordia. Tip-off time in the Special Events Center is 5:30 p.m.

Tonight's contest is the 50th in the series that dates back to January 10, 1984. FPU now leads the all-time series 37-13 and the GSAC series 29-9. The Lancers, however, have now won the past three games.
