Concordia 66, Sunbirds 57

Fresno - The Concordia University Eagles used a 17-4 spurt to break open a close game.

The Eagles dominated the first seven minutes of the second half with the run that turned a slim 28-24 half-time lead to a 17-point (45-28) bulge, then hung on for a 66-57 Golden State Athletic Conference win.

The Sunbirds closed the gap to eight points (60-52) with 90 seconds to play, but would draw no closer.

"We were cold," said FPU head coach Jim Hall. "It is the second game in a row, now, that we have shot poorly.. We have had open looks. Once we start to shoot better we will be a better basketball team. You won't win many games shooting 34.percent."

Kristine Jensen led the Eagles (4-4, 2-0) with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Monica Quan added 12 points.

Senior Denise Fast led the Sunbirds (4-5, 0-2) with 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block before fouling out in the closing seconds. Kari Cox added 11 points and five rebounds.

The Sunbirds will now take of a couple of weeks off for final exams and the Christmas break. The return to action in Santa Clarita on Friday, December 29 (4:00 p.m. tip-off) in the GSAC Challenge Tournament. Friday FPU will tangle with Lubbock Christian (Texas) then follow with Cerdarville (Ohio), ranked #2 in the current NAIA Divisoin 2 poll, on Saturday, December 30 (6:00).

FPU returns to GSAC action on January 3, 2006, in Santa Barbara against Westmont (5:30).

The next home game will be Saturday, January 7 when the Sunbirds host Point Loma Nazarene. Tip-off time in the Special Events Center is 23:30 p.m.

Tonight's contest is the 46th in a series that dates back to January 3, 1986. The Sunbirds hold a 28-17 overall advantage, including a 23-13 edge in GSAC games. FPU has also won the last four consecutive games and eight of the last 10.

Friday, December 29 (4:00) - The Sunbirds will be in Santa Clarita where they will face Lubbock Christian in the first round of the GSAC Challenge.
