Saturday, January 14, 2006 - GSAC Game 6
#1 Vanguard 85, FPU 44
Fresno - It was business as usual for the top-ranked Vanguard University Lions, even without their head coach.
Entering the contest with the host Sunbirds the Lions were a perfect 13-0 (6-0 in GSAC) averaging 88.0 points per game on offense and yielding 47.4 points per game to their opponents.
That pretty much describes what happened at the Special Events Center tonight.
The fact the head coach Russ Davis did not make the trip because of a chronic back condition did not deter the Lions. They raced to a 39-12 lead by half-time and cruised to an 85-44 win over the Sunbirds.
"They are something special," said FPU head coach Jim Hall. "We created some opportunities and had some open looks, but you aren't going to beat many teams when you shoot 32 percent."
Jessica Richter and Melissa Cook led the Lions with 20 and 17 points, respectively.
FPU, still winless in GSAC play, did not have a player reach double figures. Melissa Montoya was closest with nine points.
FPU will be in Santa Clarita Tuesday to face No. 15 The Master's College, then returns home Thursday to host No. 9 Azusa Pacific. Both contests begin at 5:30 p.m.
