Thursday, January 19, 2006 - GSAC Game #8
Final -
#9 Azusa Pacific 88, FPU 69

Box Score

Fresno - The 9th-ranked Cougars of Azusa Pacific University used double-figure scoring from five players to defeat the host Sunbirds 88-69 in Golden State Athletic Conference play tonight in the Special Events Center.

Monica Somers (21 points) and Lindsey West (19 points) did most of the damage, but there was plenty of help from Meliame Hala'ufia (12 points), Sarah Leathers (12) and Alyssa Ferdaszewski (10).

APU broke a 31-31 tie with a 9-2 run to close the first half and carry a 40-33 lead into the locker room. They opened the final 20 minutes with an 8-3 run to take control of the game.

"We played well for the first 28 minutes," said FPU coach Jim Hall who watched his team drop their 10th in a row. "But that isn't going to get it done, especially against a top-10 team. We'll keep working."

Senior guard Denise Fast was the lone bright spot for the Sunbirds (4-13, 0-8). Fast had a game-high 25 points, and also led FPU with six rebounds, seven assists and three steals.

"She gives us everything she's got every game," said Hall of Fast.

Kari Cox added 12 points for FPU, while Brooke Stanley chipped in with 10.

The Sunbirds travel to El Cajon for a 2:30 Saturday tip-off against a the San Diego Christian Hawks (1-14, 0-8).

FPU returns to the Special Events Center next Tuesday to host Hope International (10-7, 3-5). Tip-off time is 5:50 p.m.
