Final -

Sunbirds break 10-game skid with win over Hawks

Box score

El Cajon - Both the host San Diego Christian College Hawks and the visiting Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds entered this afternnoon's Golden State Athletic Conference contest winless in their last 10 games.

Something had to give. In the end it was the Hawks defense.

The Sunbirds, powered by guards Brooke Stanley and Denise Fast, picked up a 70-64 GSAC win this afternoon in El Cajon.

Stanley drained seven consecutive 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 27 points to lead FPU. Fast wasn't far behind with 26 points.

"To be candid," said FPU coach Jim Hall, "Our defense wasn't very good tonight, but we did a great job offensively. They played a 2-3 zone for all but three possessions - because we scored lay-ups on those three possessions - and we were very patient. We worked the ball around their zone until we got good looks for Brooke or Denise. Those two really stepped up tonight."

FPU led 29-27 after 20 minutes of play, but despite building the lead to six points several times, could not shake the hosts.

"We got it up to six a bunch of times," said Hall. "But they kept making shots. We couldn't get any distance on them."

The Hawks elected to foul in the final two minutes, but the strategy did not pay off as Stanley and Fast were good on a combined 9-of-12 from the charity stripe in the final 94 seconds.

Jaime Geagel led the Hawks (1-15, 0-9) with 29 points.

The Sunbirds return to the Special Events Center on Tuesday to host a much-improved team from Hope International University in Fullerton. The Royals were 10-7 overall and 3-5 in GSAC play heading into tonight's contest at top-ranked Vanguard.

Tip-off time in the Special Events Center is 5:30 p.m.

* Stanley tied the FPU record for consecutive 3-pointers... she now shares the record with Renee Longshore (vs. California Baptist, March 4, 1997) and Stacey Sedwick (vs. Southern California College, February 20, 1999).

* The win ends the longest winless streak in FPU history (previous streak was six losses set during the 1998-99 season)...
