Louisville, Kentucky - Fresno Pacific University distance specialist Melissa Dowlat completed the 2005 cross country season with a 19:11.75 effort at the NAIA National Cross Country Championship this morning in Louisville, Kentucky.
Dowlat, a sophomore from Sutter Creek (Amador High School), finished 80th in a field of 259 runners. She was the only FPU runner to qualify for the championship.
Dowlat is the 19th athlete to complete at the National championship and the first since Jennifer Toler's 47th-place finish in 2002. Her 80th-place finish ranks 8th-best by an FPU runner at the National Championship.
Julia Howard of Simon Fraser University of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, won the women's race with a time of 17:24.15.
The women's team championship was also won by Simon Fraser. Concordia of Irvine, who won the Region 2 championship at Woodward Park two weeks ago, was the best California team. The Eagles finished fifth.
