FPU 5, Alienate International 1

Fresno - The Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds got there 2004 season, and their own invitational tournament, off to a roaring start with a 5-1 win over Alliant International University.

Josh Smith's corner kick in the tenth minute gave the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead. Smith well-struck ball deflected off a FPU defender past goalkeeper Jose Lopez.

Orlando Ramirez' header, off a Nick Lomeli cross, tied it 22 minutes later.

FPU took the lead in the 42nd minute when Adam Arteaga headed in a cross from Eddie Gutierrez.

The Sunbirds dominated play in the second half with goals by Cameron Hill, Gaston Cignetti and anothe by Ramirez.

"It took us a while to get our offense going," said Jaime Ramirez. "But when we did, we demonstrated how versatile we are.

In the opening game, The Master's College defeated Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (Arizona) 7-0

Action resumes at noon with Alliant facing The Master's. FPU takes on Embry-Riddle at 3:00 PM.
