FPU 2, Holy Names 1

Box score

Fresno - Second half goals by Jared Dugger and Eli Delgado thwarted an upset bid by the visiting Holy Names University Hawks as the No. 2 Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds pulled out a 2-1 win at Steinert Field this evening.

Tobias Edenvik hammered home a rebound off a free kick just 14:24 into the match to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

That stood up until 57:57 when Dugger launched a 30-yard rocket from the left side to tie it 1-1. Dugger dribbled the ball 10 yards down the left flank after taking a pass from Gaston Cignetti then sent it high far post past Hawks goalkeeper Chris Brunson.

Dugger, normally a striker, played the entire game at left back in place of Erin Breen (serving a red card suspension).

"I've been all over the place this season," said Dugger. "I didn't think I hit it hard enough, but it went in. I really don't care about goals. I'm just glad we won."

Cignetti also started the play that created the match winner. Cignetti served the ball high into the box looking for Orlando Ramirez. Brunsun two-fisted the ball away from Ramirez, but right to Delgado who one-timed it low into the right corner of the goal.

With just under 5:28 to play the Sunbirds packed it in to preserve the win and remain unbeaten at 6-0-0.

"I think we are the best 1-4 team in the country," declared Lance Thompson . "We are starting to play some good soccer. This was a great learning opportunity for our players. Fresno is a great team. This was a great battle."

There was no argument form FPU head coach Jaime Ramirez. "The players on these two teams know each other very well. They marked Eddie (Gutierrez), Orlando and Gaston very well. We needed someone else to come through. Fortunately we had a couple of guys that did that for us tonight."

There is little rest for the Sunbirds as they travel to Belmont on Tuesday to face No.19 Notre Dame de Namur University (4:00 PM).

Next home match for FPU is Friday, September 24, when they host Menlo College. Kick-off time at Steinert Field is 7:00 PM.
