Foelz keeps win streak alive, lifts Sunbirds over No. 4 Santa Fe

Fresno - Marco Foelz stretched his personal win streak to 11 matches. Head coach Neil Castro and the rest of the Sunbirds tennis team are very happy he did.

Foelz' marathon 7-6 (11-9), 5-7, 6-4, win over Peter Sauska lifted the tenth-ranked Sunbirds to a 5-4 upset win over the fourth-ranked College of Santa Fe Spin this afternoon at the Haak Tennis Complex.

"We finally got over the hump," said Castro. "We battled. We competed today. We finally beat a good team in a close match."

It was easily the biggest win in FPU's short, 12-match, tennis history. The Spin were NAIA national runners-up last year.

The day began at 1:00 with three doubles matches. The Sunbirds got in a hole early losing two of three.

Matt Carroll, Anthony Zafiris and Victor Medina each won individual matches for FPU to tie it at 4-4. That left it up to Foelz, who finally notched match-point a few minutes past 6:00 p.m.

"I knew it would come down to my match," said Foelz. "When I heard Matt's score I knew it would be my match. I was cramping and tired, but I had to fight. I knew I would not be losing today."

Foelz is now 11-1 on the season. He dropped his season-opener to Max Taylor of UC Santa Barbara (6-3, 3-6, 6-4) on January 21, and has not lost since.

"I'm proud of the way we played today," said Castro. "We did what we needed to do. This was the last team on our schedule that is ranked ahead of us. Hopefully we helped ourselves. Hopefully the raters will take notice."

The Sunbirds are 3-2 against higher ranked opponents. They lost both matches to defending NAIA National Champion, and top ranked, Azusa Pacific (3-6 and 2-7), but took two from No. 6 Vanguard (6-2 and 7-2).

The Sunbirds will be in Fullerton on Wednesday for a Golden State Athletic Conference match against Hope International.

The next home game is Friday, March 24, when the Sunbirds host DePaul. Match-time is 2:00 at the Haak Tennis Complex.
