UC Santa Cruz holds off Sunbirds 4-3

Santa Cruz - The NCAA Divisions III defending national champion Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz held off the Sunbirds for a 4-3 win in Santa Cruz this afternoon.

Matt Seeberger defeated Carroll 7-6 (5), 6-4 at No. 1 singles, then teamed with Shane Templeman to defeat Carroll and Marco Foelz 8-6 at No. 1 doubles.

The Banana Slugs claimed the doubles point thanks to the 9-8 (4) victory of Jared Kamel and Alexander Villalobos over Greg Jackson and Roberto Bianco at No. 2 doubles.

Petr Sitnikov, Roberto Bianco and Greg Jackson claimed singles wins for the Sunbirds at No. 2, 4 and 6, respectively.

Anthony Zafiris, who is nursing an undisclosed leg injury, was held out of singles play.

"I thought we played well," said FPU head coach Neil Castro. "It was a good test for us, but we lost a couple of close ones. We missed Anthony in singles, but we got better as a team today."

The Sunbirds will be in Santa Clara on Monday for a 6:00 p.m. date with the NCAA Division ! Broncos.
