Tuesday, May 16, 2006 - NAIA National Championship
Round 2 -
Sunbirds defeat Shorter, Georgia 5-1

Mobile, Alabama - The Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2006 NAIA National Tennis Championship with a 5-1 win over Shorter College of Georgia this afternoon.

FPU started with doubles wins at numbers 2 and 3. FPU's number I team of Matt Carroll and Marco Foelz  lost by 9-7 score.

"We let that one get away a little bit," said FPU coach Neil Castro. "Our guys were fired up. They had a lot of energy and were ready to play.

Castro rested Foelz (sore back) during singles play by inserting Greg Jackson at number six and bumping Victor Medina to five. Medina responded with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Daviz Araiza. That, combined with Carroll's 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 win at number 1, and Anthony Zafiris' 6-2, 6-2 win at number 3 lifted the Sunbirds to a 5-1 win.

"I think there is a lot of balance in the top 15 or 16 teams that are here," said Castro. "Tomorrow should be an old-fashioned barn-burner."

The fifth-seeded Sunbirds will face No. 4 seed Freed-Hardeman of Tennessee tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
