Player Bio

Kelly (Watney) Winter is back for her third season as a Sunbirds assistant coach. Prior to her marriage to Ray Winter in the summer of 2001, Kelly Watney appeared in 151 matches and 496 games for the Sunbirds from 1997-2000.

Kelly graduated from Clovis West High School in 1997, then helped the Sunbirds to two Golden State Athletic Conference, and three NAIA Region Championships. As a junior in She guided the 1999 Sunbirds to the NAIA National Championship match where they eventually fell to defending champion Columbia, Missouri, in four games. During her volleyball career she amassed 239 service aces, 271 blocks, 489 kills, 1,177 digs and an FPU-record 5,139 assists. During her three years as the starting setter she dominated the GSAC awards being named GSAC setter of the week on 15 occasions. Eleven times she was named the NAIA Region setter of the week, and twice the NAIA National setter of the week.

In 2000 Kelly capped an outstanding four-year volleyball career with a long list of honors. She was named to the All-GSAC team for the third time; was also named GSAC and NAIA Region 2 player of the year; named to the NAIA National Championship all-Tournament team; and named to the NAIA All-America first team. She was also one of six student-athletes selected to the 2000 Verizon Academic All-District VIII College team by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (District VIII includes the western United States and British Columbia).

Kelly also competed for the Sunbirds in track and field and earned the team's MVP award when she competed in the javelin, 400 meter hurdles, relays and the heptathlon in 1999. She was the 2001 GSAC heptathlon champion, then earned NAIA All-America status with a fourth-place finish in the javelin at the 2001 NAIA National Championship.

Kelly completed her intercollegiate career as the most decorated student-athlete in FPU history. She is the only FPU student-athlete to earn NAIA All-America and NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete honors in two sports. In all she earned three NAIA All-America honors in volleyball (1998, 99, 00) and one in track and field (2001). She earned NAIA All-America honorable mention status in track and field (javelin) as a junior in 2000. She was twice named to the NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete Team in track (2000, 01) and once in volleyball (2000).
