Prior to FPU - Kara was a four-year starter in volleyball at Kerman High School... played both middle and outside... helped Kerman build a perfect 40-0 North Sequoia League record during her career... four-time first team NSL honoree... twice named the NSL player of the year... twice named to The Fresno Bee all-star team... led KHS to back-to-back Division 4 Section titles... played club ball with the Central Cal and Sports City... was featured in Student Sports Magazine and listed in "Fab 50 - Student Athletes Most Watched"... was a four-year varsity starter in basketball... helped the team to a 36-4 record during her four seasons of play... broke the 1,000 career point barrier and went on to become the third highest scorer in KHS history... four-time first team North Sequoia League pick and two-time NSL player of the year in basketball.
Personal - Kara's parents are Ann and John Verwey of Kerman... is the oldest of four children... has one brother, Johnny and sisters Amy and Alison... enjoys movies, water skiing, basketball and music... has been active in fellowship of Christian Athletes... has made three missionary service trips to Mexico... home church is Fresno Christian Reformed Church where she has served as a member of the worship team... has worked on the family dairy and also volunteered at Valley Children's hospital... admires singer/pianist Candace Vander Kooi... is a physical education major.
As a freshman (2000) - Kara enrolled at Fresno State University where she appeared in 28 of the team's 30 matches... finished third on the team in kills and fourth in digs... had 10+ kills in 10 of the Bulldogs 13 final matches... reached double-figures in kills in 17 matches... had three 20+ kill matches, including a season-high 24 against Nevada... had a season-best 19 digs against 19th-ranked Santa Clara... recorded nine double-doubles on the season... was named to the Virginia Patriot Invitational All-Tournament team... Fresno State Scholar Athlete... was named to the Western Athletic Conference All-Freshman team.
As a sophomore (2001) - Kara appeared in 85 of the Bulldogs 88 games over 24 matches, helping the team to a 14-10 record... opened the season with 26 kills, 14 digs and 4 blocks against Florida State at the Pepperdine Tournament... was named to the all-tournament teams at the Pepperdine and Fresno State tournaments... recorded double-doubles in nine contests... was second on the team with 282 kills... also second on the team with 213 digs.
As a junior (2002) - Kara appeared in 41 of the team's 43 matches for a total of 130 games... averaged 3.09 kills, third highest on the team... also averaged 2.55 blocks per game... had shoulder surgery in the off season.
As a senior (2003) - Kara completed her career as a member of the 2003 NAIA National Championship Sunibrds... averagedd 3.24 kills and 1.25 digs per game... totalled 856 kills and 505 digs in 269 career games... named to the GSAC and NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete teams.
