#1 Sunbirds sweep #10 Concordia 30-28, 30-11, 30-21

Box score

Irvine - The Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds passed another big test this afternoon, and perhaps gained a bit more revenge with their 30-28, 30-11, 30-21 sweep of No. 10 Concordia- in the Eagles back yard.

The Golden State Athletic Conference win gives FPU a season sweep over the squad that ended their 2004 season in the NAIA National Championship quarterfinals.

It also pushes the FPU's unblemished record to 24-0 overall and 14-0 in GSAC play.

The Sunbirds trailed early in Game 1 (6-2), but finally caught the Eagles at 18-18. FPU lead by as a many as four points (23-19) but the Eagles tied it at 25, 26 and 27 before a kill and an attack error by Concordia's Ashley Robbins, sandwiched by a pair of Lira Xavier kills, ended it.

The Sunbirds stormed to a 20-6 lead in Game 2, and then called a block party as three of their final 10 points came via blocks at the net. FPU hit a red-hot .448 (15-2-29) while forcing 11 Concordia hitting errors and
a -.135 (6-11-37).

The Eagles held a brief early lead in Game 3, but the Sunbirds would not be denied.

Thais Julio lead FPU with 16 kills, nine digs and three blocks. Lorena Zuleta hit .625 while pounding nine kills and adding three blocks. Xavier finished with eight kills, 11 digs and a couple of blocks.

Freshman setter Shu Liu had another great match with distributed 35 assists and also had 10 digs, five blocks and four kills. Samantha Weatherly lead FPU's back row with 14 digs.

Lindsey Campbell led the Eagles (18-5, 9-5) with seven kills and six blocks.

When the dust had settled FPU had hit a respectable .250 (49-18-124) while holding the Eagles to net zero (27 kills, 27 errors on 117 swings).

"Give them credit," said FPU head coach Dennis Janzen of the Eagles. "They came out on fire and gave us their best shot. We were ready to play, but it took us a while to deal with their emotion. We hung in there and got it done. I thought Lorena (Zuleta) had a great match, especially defensively. She touched a lot of ball and altered several others. She was stellar."

The Sunbirds continue their three-match run against top-25 opponents next Tuesday when they travel to Azusa to face No. 15 Azusa Pacific (7:00 p.m.). Next Saturday FPU will host No.3- and defending NAIA National Champion- California Baptist. The first ball will be served in the Special Events Center at 3:00 p.m.
