Sunbirds sweep San Diego Christian

Box score 30-12, 30-23, 30-17

Fresno - The Sunbirds regular season ended today- much like it began on August 26- with a quick 3-0 sweep.

FPU ran their record to 31-0 including a 20-0 mark in Golden State Athletic Conference play this afternoon in the Special Events Center with a 75-minute, 30-12, 30-23, 30-17 sweep of San Diego Christian.

The only blemish on an otherwise perfect afternoon came early in Game 2, following wholesale substitutions after a 30-12 Game 1 blowout. It took the Sunbirds about 10 minutes to find their grove. By then the Hawks had built an 7-point (15-8) lead. That changed moments later when FPU reeled off an 11-0 run on the serve of freshman setter Allanah Munson.

That changed the score from 17-11 Hawks to 22-17 Sunbirds. The Hawks never recovered and the Sunbirds cruised to the win.

"I was real pleased with our play today," said FPU head coach Dennis Janzen. "Our six seniors were able to celebrate their final regular season home match.

Indeed they did. Lorena Zuleta led the way offensively with 13 kills. There was plenty of help from Shailey Jones (12 kills), Deanna Richards (10 kills) and Lira Xavier (8 kills, 7 digs, 3 blocks). On the back line it was Samantha Weatherly leading the way with 20 digs. She was followed by Gera Bahr with (8 digs). All are seniors.

FPU will host a Region 2 quarterfinal on Tuesday. The opponent and start time will be announced late tomorrow.

Updated Records
San Diego Christian: 4-18, 2-18

Updated Series
The Sunbirds hold a 17-2 advantage in the series and have won the last nine matches.
