Tuesday, November 15, 2005 - NAIA Region 2 Quarterfinal Sunbirds make short work of Menlo
Box score
Fresno - The Sunbirds needed only 60 minutes to sweep the visiting Menlo College Oaks 30-12, 30-18, 30-15 in an NAIA Region 2 quarterfinal in the Special Events Center before a sparse crowd of 125.
FPU wasted no time roaring to a 6-1 lead in Game 1. That prompted a Menlo time out. It had little effect as FPU pushed the lead to 13-3 forcing a second Oaks time out.
The only glitch in the evening came early in Game 2 when the Oaks built an early 3-point lead (7-4). It did not last long as FPU responded with a 10-2 run to make it 14-9 FPU. From there the Sunbirds put it on cruise control.
Lorena Zuleta (11 kills, 5 blocks) and Thais Julio (10 kills, 3 digs) lead FPU, who, as a team out-hit the Oaks .429 to -.032.
Freshman setter Shu Liu sparkled with six kills on seven swings, 32 assists four digs and a couple of service aces. Senior libero Samantha Weatherly led FPU's back row with 10 digs.
Malia Pires led the Oaks with six kills while Christia Hewett had 10 digs.
FPU's head coach Dennis Janzen liked what he saw.
"When you reach the postseason you want to on and off the floor as quickly as you can," said Janzen. "We were able to get everybody into the match and still do that tonight. We won the serve/pass game and at times were dominant. I am real pleased with how the entire team played."
The win insures that the Sunbirds will host the Region 2 championship this weekend. FPU will face the Biola/Point Loma Nazarene winner at 7:00 p.m. Friday in one semifinal.
The California Baptist /Vanguard winner will face the Concordia/Azusa Pacific winner Friday at 4:00 p.m. The championship is set for 7:00 p.m. Saturday. If a third place match is ordered by the NAIA National Selection Committee, it would be played Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
The champion earns the Region 2 automatic berth into the 20-team National Championship field.
Golden State Athletic Conference member Point Loma Nazarene of San Diego will again host the National Championship. All matches will be played in Golden Gymnasium, November 30 through December 3.
