NAIA Region 2 Semifinals: Lancers, Sunbirds advance

Fresno - The top two seeds in the NAIA Region 2 Championship Tournament both got a scare on Friday night, but will face off in the championship tomorrow evening.

The top-ranked Sunbirds swept #4 Point Loma Nazarene 30-15, 30-22, 30-28 but not before trailing throughout Game 3.

Second-seeded California Baptist dropped a full game but still managed to defeat third-seeded Azusa Pacific 30-22, 21-30, 30-22, 30-24.

FPU (33-0) sailed through Game 1, had few problems in Game 2, but trailed 27-25 in Game 3 before closing it out with a couple of roof-blocks and a kill by Lorena Zuleta.

FPU relied on freshmen Brittany Pierce and Thais Julio. Both had 18 kills and seven digs. Zuleta added 13 kills and was in on five blocks. Lira Xavier added nine kills and 14 digs.

FPU libero Samantha Weatherly lead all players with 16 digs.

Melissa Boer led Point Loma Nazarene (20-13) with 15 kills . Kate Alderson was next with nine kills and 13 digs and was in on three blocks as the Sea Lions out-blocked FPU 9-7.

"We passed well enough tonight," said FPU head coach Dennis Janzen. "But we never got our middle (attack) going. We played well in Game 1 but we tried to take a few short cuts after that and they made us play."
